Title:

Don't Be Chicken! Engage With Your Community Through Service-Learning

Abstract:

Are you interested in generating connections between students and their local communities but not sure how to start? Hear from an early-career teacher and her mentor on the use of service-learning to increase students' leadership skills, sense of empowerment, and ability to apply their learning to the real world. Learn about a school service project in which students built a chicken coop, practiced care and management of chickens, and donated eggs to a local food pantry. Resources, templates and example service-learning opportunities for different subject areas/grade levels will be shared to get you started towards implementation in your own classroom!

Presenters:

Emily Chambers, Belvidere North High School District 100, Belvidere
Teresa Kruger, District 100, Belvidere
